The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector under ticker XLK, saw positive breadth on Wednesday, October 28 even as high-quality leadership remains rare. In EasyAlpha's ratings, only 29.7% of the fund's weight sits in companies graded A or B. Historically, companies graded A or B have shown stronger fundamentals and a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Yet 56.3% of sector members advanced during the session, with the equal-weighted sector return of +1.0% outpacing the cap-weighted sector move of +0.5%. Infrastructure and enterprise names drove that outperformance, propelled by an earnings beat and raised outlook from Flex Ltd and reassuring capital-spending guidance from Oracle Corporation.

Flex Ltd posted the largest gain in the sector, ending +11.6% after reporting 25% sales growth and raised full-year guidance. Enterprise software and cloud provider Oracle Corporation gained as well, closing +10.6% after its investor presentation capped external funding needs at $20 billion through fiscal 2030. The clear capital limit and a projected timeline to positive free cash flow in fiscal 2028 helped calm market worries about uncontrolled data-center spending.

Meta detailed specifications for its Prometheus computing supercluster, revealing widespread deployment of switching systems and processors from Arista Networks and Broadcom to connect next-generation artificial-intelligence clusters. The buildout provided tangible evidence that data-center investment by major platforms continues to generate revenue across specialized component suppliers.

The session was not uniformly positive across sub-industries. Cybersecurity provider Fortinet Inc posted the largest decline in the sector, finishing -5.9% as traders trimmed positions ahead of its third-quarter financial report scheduled for after the closing bell. Cautious analyst commentary on slowing firewall refresh cycles and elevated valuation multiples added to selling pressure during regular hours.

XLK closed at $191.18, recording a day move of +0.9% as technology outperformed a broader market where 6 of the 11 sectors rose. The session provided relief after recent cooling that left the fund -1.7% over the past month, though the advance reinforces a steady intermediate trend of +19.9% over the past six months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
