The Information Technology sector saw narrow participation on Tuesday, September 15, with only 37.8% of member companies advancing while 41.9% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. The cap-weighted sector moved -0.3%, while the exchange-traded fund tracking the space, the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK), closed -0.3% at $183.76. The equal-weighted sector recorded -0.2%, illustrating how modest losses in the largest index weights shaped the day. That pressure materialized as investors weighed concerns about a potential slowdown in artificial intelligence spending.

Performance diverged sharply between large software and hardware giants and more specialized technology providers. Mobile semiconductor stocks rallied, with Skyworks Solutions Inc (+13.6%) pacing the sector during a rally in smartphone chip stocks while large-cap technology slipped. Network security provider F5 Networks Inc (+4.7%) followed, supported by the introduction of automated threat detection designed for artificial intelligence workloads. Cybersecurity peer Fortinet reached an all-time high. On the enterprise side, Cisco announced new observability tools and AI monitoring features for its Splunk platform. In hardware, HP unveiled a mobile workstation configured for local artificial intelligence computing. Conversely, Seagate Technology PLC (-4.2%) finished at the bottom of the sector as the day's steepest decliner.

The session took place in a subdued market where 2 of the 11 sectors rose. The day's modest retreat leaves XLK sitting -3.3% over the past month, reflecting short-term consolidation across the broader technology landscape following a +31.7% advance over the past six months that helped pare its -32.8% decline over the past twelve months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
