The trading week of October 26–30, 2026 concluded with market volatility easing, as the VIX declined from 19.4 following Monday's session to 17.2 at Friday's close. Breadth held positive ground despite late-week headline pressure. Within the S&P 500, 64.7% of member stocks advanced over the five trading days, with 31 companies setting fresh 52-week highs on Friday against 4 hitting new lows. Across all U.S. stocks EasyAlpha grades, 57.9% advanced over the week. Even with the S&P 500 ending -3.0% from its 52-week high, broader market conditions held firm as the retreat remained concentrated in heavily weighted technology shares rather than spreading across the wider market.
The trading week began with quiet optimism centered on artificial intelligence. On Monday, Anthropic filed for an initial public offering, lifting artificial intelligence shares at the start of the week amid broader investor caution.
Macroeconomic developments provided steady background support through midweek. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve held its benchmark interest rate steady, keeping monetary policy unchanged while markets shifted their focus toward potential policy actions later in the year. Trading remained measured as investors shifted attention toward a possible December hike following the central bank's announcement.
The tone shifted decisively in the back half of the week as earnings reports forced investors to reassess the immediate financial returns on massive artificial intelligence spending. Disappointment gathered speed as rising infrastructure costs deepened spending concerns across the technology sector. Selling intensified on Friday after Intel issued a cash-burn warning and Amazon outlined aggressive capital expenditure plans. The sudden wave of capital spending concerns sparked renewed valuation worries alongside Intel's weak outlook, accelerating Friday's selloff across major indexes.
For the full five sessions, the S&P 500 closed -0.6%, a quiet move that sits toward the lower end of its historical weekly range. Friday proved to be the week's defining session, as Friday carried the index with a single-day move of -1.8%. Other major averages reflected the concentration of the tech pullback. The Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded -0.8%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 registered -2.0%. By contrast, U.S. small caps recorded +1.3%, illustrating how smaller companies held up even as large-cap tech faltered.
Sector performance reflected this sharp internal divide. The defensive Health Care Select Sector SPDR fund led all major sector funds with +3.1%. At the opposite end, the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR fund was the weakest group, finishing at -5.3%. In fixed income, the longest-dated U.S. Treasury fund recorded +0.6%. Because bond fund values move inversely to market yields, this gain reflected declining long-term Treasury yields over the five days. In digital assets, bitcoin closed -5.0%.
Dispersion across S&P 500 member stocks reached 5.9 points. This spread was wide relative to recent weeks, marking the period as a stock-picker's week where individual company results and news drove prices rather than a uniform market tide. Within the S&P 500, Reddit, Inc. finished at -36.4% amid reports that referral traffic dropped by more than one million visits weekly due to Google's artificial intelligence search features, which raised the risk of a fourth-quarter user decline. Software maker ServiceNow Inc recorded -33.9% after it missed quarterly earnings expectations and analysts cited concerns over subscription and backlog growth. On the positive side of the index, Pentair PLC led members at +19.8%, followed closely by Vertiv Holdings Co at +19.6%.
Across every U.S. stock EasyAlpha covers, the week's widest advance came from Grid Dynamics Holdings Inc at +54.5%. Across that same broader universe, Bicara Therapeutics Inc. ended at -46.5%.
Looking ahead to next week, 144 S&P 500 companies are scheduled to report quarterly results, including Apple Inc., Berkshire Hathaway Inc, Advanced Micro Devices Inc, Palantir Technologies Inc..

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
