In the Information Technology sector, 56.0% of the graded weight sits in companies graded A or B, and 56.8% of its stocks advanced on Friday, September 4. Gains among semiconductor and hardware components helped the cap-weighted sector finish +0.3%, while the exchange-traded fund Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) closed +0.7% at $187.30. That outperformance occurred on a day when major stock indexes retreated after strong August payroll data revived expectations that the Federal Reserve might lift interest rates. Technology was an exception across the wider market, as 3 of the 11 sectors rose.

Semiconductor and hardware suppliers drove the session's upside. Sandisk Corp (+11.9%) paced the sector's gainers, supported by broad investor appetite for artificial intelligence infrastructure and memory components. KLA Corporation (+7.3%) also advanced as semiconductor-equipment makers rebounded on renewed confidence in quarterly revenue outlooks. Hardware sentiment also found support as HP introduced a fresh lineup of personal computers featuring specialized artificial intelligence chips.

The primary drag on the sector came from Fair Isaac Corporation (-16.7%), which dropped after federal housing officials instructed mortgage guarantors to permit an alternative credit score. The directive raised concerns over the company's pricing leverage and market share in mortgage scoring, prompting sharp selling across credit evaluation firms.

The sector's cap-weighted return of +0.3% slightly outpaced the +0.2% move in its equal-weighted counterpart. That divergence reflects heavier buying in the largest hardware and semiconductor names relative to the median company. Overall, 56.8% of the sector's components ended the session higher, confirming modest underlying participation despite the drag from software and credit analytics.

EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. With 56.0% of its graded weight in those top two tiers, Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund maintains a solid quality base as the sector balances hardware growth against wider market headwinds.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
