On Monday, October 5, 10 of the 11 sectors rose as 59% of the top 1000 companies finished in positive territory. The move left the market -0.4% from its peak, with fund trading volume running at 97% of a typical day's volume. It was a broad session that pushed major benchmarks back toward record levels, yet the day did little to alter underlying market conditions.
A surge in corporate merger activity and lingering relief around interest rate policy drove the day's advance. Investor sentiment received a boost after Schneider Electric agreed to acquire industrial software maker PTC in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $22.6 billion. The transaction sparked broad demand across enterprise software and hardware providers. Positive analyst sentiment also supported individual names, with Cboe Global Markets shares rising after an upgrade from TD Cowen.
At the same time, markets continued to absorb cooling labor market data reported late last week. Slower job growth helped keep expectations for an aggressive Federal Reserve rate hike in check, providing support for growth and technology shares.
The major benchmarks moved higher in tandem. The S&P 500 closed +0.7%, while the Nasdaq 100 closed +0.9%. Leadership came from Communication Services, which closed +1.2%, while Real Estate was the sole declining sector, ending at -0.4%. Across the broader market, 62.2% of tracked S&P 500 companies finished higher.
Index-level performance was anchored by top-weighted technology names, with NVIDIA Corporation closing +2.1% and Alphabet Inc Class C finishing +1.0%. Under the surface, volatility remained subdued, with the VIX settling at 15.3. In credit markets, high-yield spreads stood at 3.10%, pointing to steady borrowing conditions across corporate credit.
