Breadth inside Communication Services was unusually narrow on Thursday, September 17, with advancers reaching just 20.0% across the group. Cap-weighted performance for the sector finished at +0.6%, driven by gains in Meta Platforms Inc. (+1.3%) and Alphabet Inc Class C (+1.3%). Yet the equal-weighted return stood at -1.5%, pulled down by steep losses in T-Mobile US Inc (-5.6%). The exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector, Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC), closed at $112.33 with a move of -0.6%. Lower bond yields supported a broader stock rally where 10 of the 11 sectors rose. In contrast, the Federal Reserve instituted a 25-basis-point interest rate increase. The sector faced heavy drag as T-Mobile slid following the policy decision and an earnings-call notice that contained no new guidance.
A Divided Sector
The divergence between top holdings and the rest of the sector highlights a heavy concentration of returns. Gains in Meta and Alphabet kept the headline cap-weighted index in positive territory. In contrast, most member companies traded lower, leaving equal-weighted returns firmly in negative territory as individual laggards weighed on the group.
Quality Mix and Fund Exposure
For investors using XLC to access the group, the underlying quality mix shows clear concentrations. EasyAlpha evaluates 87.1% of the fund by weight against industry peers. Within that analyzed portion, only 25.3% sits in companies carrying A or B grades. Companies graded A or B demonstrate stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.
Over longer horizons, performance reflects these ongoing crosscurrents. The fund is +1.7% over the past month, but stands at -3.0% over the past one hundred sessions, -0.7% over six months, and -5.5% over the past twelve months. The fund holds $22.4 billion in net assets and carries an expense ratio of 0.08%, while its returns remain closely tied to how its largest holdings balance weakness across the broader group.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
