Our grade
52-week range
- Our read: Twilio Inc is graded D by EasyAlpha while 83.3% of 30 analyst ratings are buys, as solid liquidity is outweighed by weak profitability relative to industry peers.
- The day: The shares dropped 15.2% to close at $205.03 after the company guided for slower revenue growth heading into year-end.
- Watching: Whether the stock halts its four-session decline or continues to drift toward its 52-week low.
Twilio plunged on Friday, marking its fifth-largest single-day decline of the past year and its largest drop since Friday, August 7. The drop followed the company's third-quarter earnings release, where solid headline numbers were overshadowed by a cautious outlook for the final months of the year. While Twilio reported third-quarter financial results, management projected fourth-quarter organic revenue growth of only 11% to 12%.
Selling gathered pace as investors parsed the details of the slowdown. Market attention centered on signs that growth in its messaging business is slowing, raising concerns about demand in its largest segment. At the same time, the company forecast fourth-quarter non-GAAP operating income of $300 million to $310 million. A difficult tape compounded the decline, as technology stocks dropped across the market, driving trading volume in Twilio to 1.7x its 20-session average.
The sudden retreat collided with a stock that carried significant fundamental vulnerabilities into the session. EasyAlpha graded Twilio D before Friday's opening bell, placing it in the below-average quality tier relative to industry peers. Companies graded D or E have historically carried a higher risk of large drawdowns than peers graded A or B, which generally exhibit stronger fundamentals. Twilio entered the day already under sustained selling pressure, and Friday's tumble left shares -31.9% over the past month.
That quality gap is especially pronounced in valuation and profitability. The shares entered the session trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 38.6, leaving very little room for operational missteps. While Twilio achieved revenue growth of +22.0% and posted a profit margin of 20.6%, profitability remains the main area to watch in its profile. When growth in its cornerstone messaging division slowed, the rich valuation multiple faced immediate scrutiny.
Wall Street sentiment has yet to adjust to that reality. Covering analysts remain broadly positive, with an average price target of $274.44 that leaves the stock sitting 33.9% below consensus. Even after Friday's slide, Twilio trades 95.3% above its 52-week low of $105.00, preserving a substantial gain for earlier buyers while setting up an ongoing tension between ambitious analyst expectations and the operational cautions reflected in EasyAlpha's grade.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
