The session at a glance

U.S. equities enter Thursday, September 24 holding close to recent records. The broader market sits -1.3% from its peak following the session on Wednesday, September 23, when the S&P 500 closed -0.7% and the SPY fund settled at $767.81. Major indexes saw broad-based softness across the board, as the Dow finished -0.7%, the Nasdaq 100 closed -0.8%, and the Russell 2000 small caps moved -1.8%. Market breadth reflected widespread selling during the session, with only 30.6% of the top 1,000 U.S. companies finishing higher.

While New York was shut, EasyAlpha refreshed its daily evaluations against industry peers, adjusting quality grades for several companies. On the upside, EasyAlpha upgraded Godaddy Inc (GDDY) E to C on its price behaviour, APA Corporation (APA) D to B on its price behaviour, and JB Hunt Transport Services Inc (JBHT) E to C on the sentiment around it.

Conversely, EasyAlpha lowered its quality grades overnight. The newest scoring run downgraded Texas Pacific Land Corporation (TPL) B to E on its price behaviour, Quanta Services Inc (PWR) B to D on the sentiment around it, and Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO) D to E on the sentiment around it.

In round-the-clock trading, overnight benchmarks showed notable movement as of 10:20 am New York. Precious metals pulled back, with silver -4.7% and gold -2.8%, while in foreign exchange the yen against the dollar -0.8% and the pound against the dollar -0.1%.

The corporate earnings calendar picks up during Thursday, September 24's session, with 5 covered companies reporting out of 27 scheduled across the coming week. Before the opening bell, reports include Darden Restaurants Inc (DRI, graded B), Synnex Corporation (SNX, graded C), BlackBerry Ltd (BB, graded C). After the closing bell, the focus turns to retail with Costco Wholesale Corp (COST, graded B).

Several individual companies are worth monitoring during Thursday, September 24's session. Dover Corporation (DOV) is in focus heading into the opening bell. Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (TDY) draws attention following a collaboration between its Teledyne FLIR business and MentorAPM to integrate thermal imaging into mobile inspection tools. In addition, Texas Pacific Land Corporation (TPL) warrants observation after EasyAlpha downgraded the company overnight on its price behaviour.

In company-specific moves from Wednesday, September 23, Paychex Inc (PAYX) -8.8% and Expedia Group Inc. (EXPE) -7.7% posted substantial declines. Paychex dropped after reporting first-quarter fiscal 2027 results and projecting second-quarter revenue growth of about 4%. The stock faced additional pressure as management solutions revenue fell slightly below expectations. Expedia retreated as investors weighed reports that Meta's new AI agent could disrupt online travel booking. In contrast, cybersecurity names showed resilience against the broader tape, led by Palo Alto Networks Inc (PANW) +5.0% and Crowdstrike Holdings Inc (CRWD) +5.0%. Palo Alto Networks advanced after launching new defense tools for frontier AI models. CrowdStrike rose to a fresh 52-week high following a target price increase from Morgan Stanley. The moves occurred as cybersecurity stocks rallied together while broader large-cap technology declined.

Understanding why foreign exchange shifts matter to an investor holding solely domestic equities helps put overnight currency movements into context. Even when a portfolio contains only American companies, those businesses frequently operate on a global scale. A significant portion of revenue for large-cap U.S. corporations is generated outside the United States. When the U.S. dollar strengthens against currencies like the Japanese yen or the British pound, revenue earned abroad converts into fewer dollars when companies report financial results. A stronger dollar can also make American products more expensive for foreign customers, giving international competitors a price advantage. Conversely, when foreign currencies strengthen against the dollar, overseas revenues translate into higher dollar-denominated sales and profits. For this reason, broad foreign exchange trends serve as an important mechanism influencing corporate profit margins, revenue growth, and competitive dynamics across the U.S. market.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
