  • Our read: UL Solutions Inc. is graded E by EasyAlpha while 61.5% of 13 analyst ratings are buys, as an E grade among the top 1,000 U.S. companies pairs sound debt load with a troubled price trend.
  • The day: Shares fell 6.8% to close at $64.76 on Tuesday, September 15 with our sources showing no company-specific catalyst amid broader market pressure.
  • Watching: Next quarterly earnings scheduled for Tuesday, November 3.

Tuesday's sharp decline pushed the stock to a fresh 52-week low on heavy trading, with volume reaching 2.3x the 20-session average. The drop marks the stock's eighth-largest single-day decline over the past year and its largest daily drop since Tuesday, August 4.

Our sources show no company-specific announcements or filings explaining the decline. Even after recently launching a vehicle-to-grid technology certification program, the company was swept into a broader market selloff. Major indexes fell as benchmark Treasury yields jumped to multi-year highs and oil prices and bond-market pressures weighed on equities.

Tuesday's tumble compounds a steep slide that leaves the stock -17.9% so far this year and 39.6% below its 52-week peak. EasyAlpha recently lowered the company by two tiers from C to E. Every day EasyAlpha grades companies against their industry peers, where businesses graded A or B have historically carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E. While quarterly revenue grew +5.2% year over year, the company continues to see weakness in its price trend.

That E grade stands in sharp contrast to Wall Street's stance, where 61.5% of 13 analysts maintain buy recommendations with an average price target of $97.32. Even after the pullback, the shares trade at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 27.1, leaving the company valued at a premium despite its recent declines.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
