Thin breadth and a lean quality profile defined Utilities on Thursday, October 15, with just 37.0% of member companies posting positive returns and only 23.5% of the portfolio held in stocks graded A or B. Inside the exchange-traded fund Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU), downward pressure centered on Constellation Energy Corp, which settled -1.6%, offsetting NRG Energy Inc., which ended +2.0%. That divergence unfolded as official figures showed wholesale prices rose 1.3% month over month and 6.3% from a year earlier. Meanwhile, separate government data recorded that retail spending advanced 0.8% in September. Those economic readings reinforced inflation concerns, even as analysts noted that utilities drew attention as investors evaluated defensive allocations.

Across the sector, the cap-weighted group closed -0.3%, while an equal-weighted measure of its members recorded -0.2%. That slight gap indicates that the largest power and transmission companies exerted more downward pressure than the broader group. On a day when 7 of the 11 sectors rose, the defensive cohort trailed most other sectors.

EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because the vast majority of the fund's holdings sit in C grades or lower, the basket carries limited exposure to those higher quality tiers. For investors turning to utility stocks for defense, that distribution means the group carries more peer-relative vulnerability than a simple defensive label might suggest.

At Thursday's close, XLU settled at $41.64, finishing -0.2% on the session. While the fund stands at +0.8% over the past month, it remains -8.1% over the past 100 sessions. That multi-month performance shows that despite short-term stabilization, the sector has struggled to build sustained momentum.

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
