On Tuesday, September 22, narrow participation defined the Utilities group as only 16.1% of its member companies advanced. The exchange-traded fund Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU) finished the session -0.3%, while just 23.1% of the fund's graded weight sits in top quality tiers graded A or B. While Constellation Energy Corp managed +0.5%, selling across the broader basket pulled the sector lower as Treasury yields hovered around multiyear highs.

In the broader market, artificial intelligence shares drove gains in the major indexes while crude oil prices fell below one hundred dollars per barrel on easing geopolitical concerns. Across the wider equity market, 5 of the 11 sectors rose, highlighting a divided trading environment where advances were confined to specific segments of the market.

Inside the sector, the cap-weighted group moved -0.3%, matching the equal-weighted return of -0.3%. That alignment shows that weakness was distributed broadly across the sector rather than driven by a single large constituent. On an individual company level, NiSource Inc recorded the steepest decline among peers, finishing -1.6%. Conversely, Xcel Energy Inc was among the few advancing names, closing +0.3%. The narrow range between the best and worst performers illustrates how uniform the day's pressure was across the member list.

Tuesday's session extends a prolonged downturn for the sector. XLU, which closed at $40.52, has recorded moves of -5.3% over the past month, -10.1% across six months, and -13.5% over the past one hundred sessions. Across the past twelve months, the fund sits at -52.4%. That extended drawdown shows that the session's narrow participation reflects a continuous period of pressure across the broader utility group rather than an isolated one-day pullback.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
