EasyAlpha grades the stocks in the sector against their industry peers, and only 27.7% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. On Wednesday, October 7, breadth inside the sector was thin as only 27.6% of its S&P 500 members advanced. The Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that trades under the ticker XLU, closed 0.0% at $41.16, while the broader Utilities sector finished -0.1%. The fund held steady primarily because independent power producer NRG Energy Inc. closed +4.8%, offsetting Nextera Energy Inc, which finished -1.1%. That divergence followed competing crosscurrents across the market. Benchmark bond yields pressured equities during morning trading. Those pressures moderated later as bond yields eased after an afternoon bond auction.

Interest rates served as the dominant hurdle for utility shares throughout the session. Government bond yields rose sharply during morning trading, with the 10-year Treasury yield reaching 5.36% amid volatile energy prices. Equities trimmed their losses in the afternoon when bond yields eased following a strong 10-year Treasury auction. Even so, persistent rate worries lingered as central bank minutes showed policymakers anticipating further rate hikes before year-end.

While higher yields restrained regulated utilities, independent electricity generators found distinct momentum. Power producers drew support after Constellation Energy agreed to supply 890 megawatts of nuclear capacity to Google. Sentiment was also bolstered by a long-term contract signed by Black Hills Corporation to serve a planned data center. Those agreements helped lift independent power producers including NRG Energy Inc. while traditional regulated utilities struggled.

Across the broader market, 3 of the 11 sectors rose, reflecting cautious sentiment. For the utilities group, cap-weighted performance closely tracked equal-weighted returns, where 0.0% matched the flat tone across individual constituents. Yet the contrast between fast-growing power generators and debt-heavy regulated utilities underscores diverging business profiles under the same sector umbrella.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
