On Monday, September 21, the Utilities sector faced broad selling pressure as only 12.9% of its companies managed to rise. The exchange-traded fund for the group, Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU), closed -1.1% at $40.65, while the broader cap-weighted sector finished -0.4%. Although large holdings helped limit the fund's headline drop, the defensive group struggled as Treasury yields hovered near multiyear highs.

The day's internal dynamic showed clear divergence between heavyweights and the rest of the group. The cap-weighted sector move of -0.4% was narrower than the equal-weighted return of -0.6%, showing that larger constituents provided partial shelter. Top performers included Constellation Energy Corp with a close of +2.9% and WEC Energy Group Inc at +0.3%. Even so, widespread weakness across smaller constituents set the tone, with PG&E Corp settling at -2.0%. The retreat stood out on a session when 7 of the 11 sectors rose, as capital rotated into growth areas like semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Portfolio quality inside the fund explains part of this vulnerability. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. In XLU, only 22.2% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies with an A or B quality grade. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. For investors tracking the sector through XLU, which carries an expense ratio of 0.08% across $21.8 billion in net assets, most of the underlying exposure remains concentrated in average and lower-rated peers.

The session adds to an extended period of underperformance for the fund. Over the past month, XLU stands at -7.1%, with a six-month move of -9.2% and a return of -11.0% across recent months. Over the past twelve months, the fund sits at -52.1%.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
