On Tuesday, September 29, breadth across the Utilities sector was unusually broad, with 96.7% of its member stocks advancing. The cap-weighted sector finished +1.1%, closely tracking the equal-weighted measure at +1.2%, which shows that gains were distributed evenly across small and large utility operators alike. The move carried Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLU, to close +1.2% at $39.72. Individual leaders included Edison International at +4.0% and Pinnacle West Capital Corp at +2.3%, while The AES Corporation was the sector's weakest performer at -0.1%. Despite the broad advance, top-tier quality remains concentrated, with 23.0% of the fund's graded weight in companies graded A or B. The sector led the broader market on a day when only 3 of the 11 sectors rose, lifted by defensive rotation and dip-buying even as rising Treasury yields and elevated bond yields weighed on the wider market.

The session's advance stands out against the sector's extended record of weakness. Over longer horizons, utilities have faced steady pressure: the fund is -7.0% over the past month, -12.0% over the past 100 sessions, -13.4% over six months, and -54.4% over the past twelve months. Tuesday's broad participation reflects a session where buyers stepped in after extended declines, but the underlying fundamental quality across the sector remains thin.

EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Across the sector, more than three-quarters of the portfolio sits in average or lower-graded tiers.

While XLU offers an expense ratio of 0.08%, owning the fund means accepting the sector's collective quality mix, where the vast majority of assets remain outside the top tiers.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
