52-week range
- Our read: EasyAlpha grades Valero Energy Corporation D, indicating below-average quality with more warning signs than industry peers, where strong growth is countered by fragile volume behavior.
- The day: The stock fell 9.3% to close at $387.19 on Tuesday, October 27 as crude oil benchmark prices eased on Middle East diplomacy hopes.
- Watching: Trading volume patterns after turnover reached 2.1x the 20-session average during Tuesday's retreat.
Benchmark crude oil prices dropped on Tuesday as hopes for Middle East diplomacy and higher Russian diesel production eased concerns over fuel-market tightness. Refiners faced broad selling pressure as investors questioned whether exceptional refining margins could persist.
The downturn followed an extended multi-month advance for the stock. Valero had recently reported third-quarter net income of $6.8 billion and adjusted earnings of $23.90 per share, showing that the selloff did not stem from an earnings disappointment. Selling pressure picked up after an analyst downgraded the shares to sell heading into the week.
EasyAlpha graded the refiner D heading into the session, placing it in the below-average quality tier against industry peers. In EasyAlpha's historical research, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Valero's strongest dimension in the data is growth, underpinned by quarterly revenue growth of +51.9% and a return on equity of 27.6%. Yet these backward-looking financial figures stem directly from the peak refining margins that commodity markets began to unwind on Tuesday.
The stock carried significant valuation risk after advancing +137.8% so far this year. Tuesday's tumble pulled the price 16.1% below its 52-week high of $461.52. EasyAlpha's scoring flags volume behavior as the primary vulnerability for the business. That vulnerability was visible during the session as trading volume expanded to 2.1x the 20-session average.
Wall Street analysts had entered the week largely supportive of the stock. Across 20 covering analysts, 45.0% maintain buy ratings, with an average price target of $423.53. That target stands 9.4% above Tuesday's close. Even so, Tuesday's sharp drop shows how quickly sentiment can pivot when refining economics soften. For a stock carrying a D grade, exceptional past profitability does not eliminate the risk of rapid repricing when sector tailwinds fade.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
