Breadth inside the utilities sector favored gainers on Wednesday, October 14, even as the broader group finished slightly lower. Across the sector, 74.1% of stocks advanced. Yet the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under ticker XLU, closed -0.3%. That divergence stemmed from an outsized drag in power generation, where Vistra Corp. finished at -6.5% while traditional regulated businesses like Consolidated Edison Inc closed +1.6%. Power producers faced renewed selling pressure after a hotter-than-expected inflation reading pushed Treasury yields higher, which weighed across power and electrical equipment companies.
The contrast between weighting methods illustrates how concentrated Wednesday's retreat was. The cap-weighted sector closed -0.3%, pulled lower by larger power producers, while an equal-weighted measure of the same universe held up better at -0.2%. Among advancing names, Southern Company finished at +1.5%. Across the wider equity market, 3 of the 11 sectors rose.
The broader market decline followed government reporting that consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier in September. That release lifted Treasury yields, heightened expectations for another Federal Reserve interest rate hike, and pressured artificial intelligence and data-center-related stocks, contributing to major equity indexes suffering their sharpest daily losses since July.
At an expense ratio of 0.08%, XLU offers low-cost access to the sector, meaning fund fees account for very little of the fund's extended drawdown. Over recent weeks, the fund is +1.0% over the past month. Over longer horizons, however, the fund stands at -8.0% over the past 100 sessions, -9.9% over the past six months, and -54.5% across the past twelve months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
