  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Vistra Corp. a B among Utilities peers in the S&P 500, where strong efficiency balances softer growth.
  • The day: Shares finished +10.8% at $160.48 after the federal government announced loan financing to expand nuclear power generation.
  • Watching: Third-quarter earnings scheduled for Friday, November 6.

The rally followed an announcement from the U.S. Department of Energy outlining a conditional $4.2 billion loan commitment to Vistra to finance nuclear power uprates and facility modernizations. The financing supports work across several stations, including the Perry and Davis-Besse plants in Ohio and the Beaver Valley station in Pennsylvania. According to federal officials, the initiative will add 433 megawatts of baseload capacity without requiring new transmission lines, supporting a broader effort to deliver "more affordable, reliable, around-the-clock energy".

The expansion comes with immediate customer demand. In January, Meta Platforms signed 20-year agreements to purchase more than 2.6 gigawatts of electricity from Vistra to power artificial intelligence data centers across the PJM region. That contract explicitly covers the 433 megawatts expected from the planned uprates. The federal funding reduces the capital cost of delivering megawatts that already have a contracted corporate buyer.

Tuesday's trading marked the stock's second-largest daily gain over the past year, with trading volume reaching 3.3x its 20-session average. The advance extends a positive stretch that leaves the shares +7.5% over the past month.

EasyAlpha grades Vistra Corp. a B against its industry peers in the Utilities sector of the S&P 500. In historical testing, companies graded A or B have shown stronger fundamentals and lower risk of severe drawdowns than those graded D or E. The company looks strongest at efficiency, supported by a profit margin of 11.6% and a return on equity of 43.0%.

The primary operational risk sits in growth. Latest quarterly revenue was -5.5% year over year, illustrating that top-line growth has lagged behind the long-term power demand narrative. Even so, Wall Street remains highly confident in the company's trajectory, with 95.0% of covering analysts rating the stock a buy and setting an average price target of $212.25.

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
