On Thursday, September 3, the Consumer Staples sector showed a sharp internal divide between its largest components and the rest of the group. While the cap-weighted sector rose +0.2%, only 29.0% of its member stocks advanced, pulling the equal-weighted sector down -0.8%. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP), an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector, fell -0.3% to close at $85.25. The gap between the cap-weighted and equal-weighted measures indicates that gains in mega-cap holdings masked broader weakness across the group.
Mega-cap retail provided the sector's primary cushion, led by Walmart Inc. (+2.2%) and Keurig Dr Pepper Inc (+0.9%). However, that strength failed to balance steep drops among food processors and packaged goods companies. Tyson Foods Inc (-7.2%) fell sharply after lowering its full-year sales and operating profit targets, pointing to severe cattle shortages and persistent margin losses in its beef segment. Pressures across grocery aisles deepened as Campbell's reduced its quarterly dividend and issued cautious guidance, citing soft demand as inflation-weary shoppers traded down to private-label brands.
The divergence left Consumer Staples lagging the broader equity market on a day when 10 of the 11 sectors rose. Over the past month, XLP has moved -0.1%, reflecting ongoing consolidation across defensive consumer names.
EasyAlpha's quality analysis shows that 50.8% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies earning an A or B quality grade. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. While high-graded retail giants continue to support the cap-weighted fund, the concentration of margin pressure in food suppliers kept overall sector breadth constrained.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
