EasyAlpha's numbers show a sector held back by thin quality support and weak participation on Tuesday, September 22. Across the Communication Services group, only 21.1% of stocks advanced, leading the cap-weighted sector to -1.0% while the exchange-traded fund Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC) closed -1.1% at $113.52. The equal-weighted group moved -1.3%, signaling that selling pressure was distributed across smaller holdings. A sharp pullback in Trade Desk Inc, which closed -5.0%, drove much of the downward momentum, while moves in Paramount Skydance Corporation Class B Common Stock (+2.0%) and Live Nation Entertainment Inc (+0.4%) were too narrow to lift the fund. The decline coincided with broader market caution as geopolitical tensions paused recent momentum, while Trade Desk Inc faced mechanical selling pressure tied to its removal from the S&P 500.

On Tuesday, September 22, 5 of the 11 sectors rose, showing a market that was split rather than in outright retreat. Yet Communication Services lagged behind the broader tape as selling broadened out across its constituent names. The disparity between the cap-weighted move of -1.0% and the equal-weighted move of -1.3% highlights that mid-sized and smaller communication companies suffered steeper declines than the mega-cap leaders that dominate the index weighting.

As a low-cost 0.08% vehicle managing $22.4 billion, Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund concentrates sector exposure where EasyAlpha grades 87.1% of the portfolio weight against industry peers. Within that graded portion, just 23.5% sits in companies graded A or B. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

The day's retreat fits into an uneven multi-month stretch for the sector. While XLC has posted +1.9% over the past month and +2.2% over the past six months, the fund sits at -2.6% over the past hundred sessions and -4.3% over the past twelve months. Without broader participation and higher representation from top-graded companies, sustained momentum remains difficult to establish.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
