On Thursday, October 15, 5 of the 8 tracked markets finished higher. The day's most unusual move came from the United Kingdom, several times the size of its usual day. At the extremes, India +1.9% set the pace at the top of the board, while South Korea -2.3% lagged the furthest behind. For investors tracking broader international exposure, the world fund closed at +0.3%, moving in step with the US market's +0.3%.

The session's most unusual activity centered on Britain, where United Kingdom +1.8% moved well outside its typical daily pattern. Large companies in London found firm footing as fiscal reassurances, stronger-than-expected August gross domestic product data, and defensive buying across healthcare and consumer staples anchored the market. That rotation into defensive sectors and fiscal reassurance supported British shares throughout the session. Major continental funds shared in the positive session, with Germany +1.5% and Eurozone +1.1% also advancing.

At the top of the board, India +1.9% led the session. Equities in India drew support as optimism around quarterly corporate earnings lifted major lenders, information technology firms, and heavyweight conglomerates. By contrast, South Korea -2.3% sat at the bottom of the table, though our sources show no reported driver for the session. Elsewhere across Asia, China +0.5% recorded a slight advance, while Japan -0.4% and Emerging Markets -0.7% closed lower.

For investors following these markets, several scheduled events stand on the immediate calendar. In India, participants are monitoring scheduled quarterly corporate earnings reports from major software firms alongside preparations for upcoming initial public offerings scheduled for later in the month. In South Korea, official calendars slate the release of preliminary export and import price indexes, while the central bank's next monetary policy decision is scheduled for later in October.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
