Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector under ticker XLC, closed -1.3% on Friday, October 30 even as 57.9% of the sector's stocks finished positive. Across the fund's graded holdings, only 27.5% of the graded weight sits in companies graded A or B, which historically carry lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. The sector's largest companies cushioned the decline, leaving cap-weighted Communication Services at -1.1% while the sector's equal-weighted return registered -1.5%. The primary drag came from Reddit, Inc., which closed -29.2% after projecting fourth-quarter revenue between $1.00 billion and $1.03 billion, alongside concerns that falling artificial intelligence search referrals could squeeze its user base.
The decline in digital platforms masked notable strength across traditional telecom and cable providers. T-Mobile US Inc led the sector, ending the session at +6.2% after improving its full-year outlook. The stock also gained ground after plans for a formal merger bid were paused, removing near-term transaction uncertainty. Comcast Corp followed at +4.3%, supported by quarterly free cash flow and profitable streaming operations. Those defensive gains allowed telecom names to decouple from the wider market on a day when major equity benchmarks declined and 5 of the 11 sectors rose.
Despite that telecom support, the sector could not escape broader headwinds facing major digital media platforms. An earnings miss and slower search growth highlighted in Alphabet's quarterly report created persistent pressure across the sector's largest components. That pressure deepened as disappointing technology earnings and guidance intensified the broader market sell-off.
Friday's session fits an extended pattern of underperformance for the sector vehicle. Over the past month, XLC stands at -9.1%, while its 100-session return sits at -10.0%. Extending the view further, the fund has returned -14.0% over the past six months and stands at -12.6% over the past twelve months. While XLC carries an expense ratio of 0.08%, the vehicle's trajectory remains heavily steered by a handful of large online media businesses.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
