On Wednesday, September 30, narrow breadth and heavy drag from large food producers weighed on Consumer Staples, where 17.6% of member stocks advanced. The cap-weighted sector finished -1.8%, trailing the equal-weight result of -1.3%, even as 51.5% of the fund's holdings hold quality grades of A or B. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that trades under the ticker XLP, closed -1.5% at $80.59. The defensive group lost ground as rising Treasury yields increased pressure on income-oriented stocks.

General Mills Inc recorded the sector's sharpest decline, ending -4.9%. The packaged-foods producer announced that Chief Operating Officer Dana McNabb will take over as chief executive officer on January 1, 2027, replacing Jeff Harmening. Shares declined as investors assessed the executive succession taking effect in January.

Gainers were sparse across the sector on the day. Caseys General Stores Inc ended +1.4%, while Molson Coors Brewing Co Class B finished +1.3%. Among major retail and grocery constituents, companies continued expanding store footprints and loyalty initiatives. Kroger launched a new rewards credit card offering expanded points on fuel and grocery spending. Separately, Walmart opened a new Neighborhood Market location in Florida to expand its regional reach.

The broad weakness in staples came on a session when 3 of the 11 sectors rose across the broader market. Over wider periods, XLP has posted -5.2% over the past month and -4.3% over the past 100 sessions, while maintaining a gain of +2.8% over the past twelve months. That structure gives investors low-cost defensive exposure across $14.5 billion in assets at an expense ratio of 0.08%.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
